Reflecting Unity
Amsterdam - Big Art - 2024 - 5,60 x 13,45 m. - Acrylic Mirror on Europallet
The Euro pallet is an early symbol of European collaboration, demonstrating how joint efforts can lead to greater outcomes. Designed in 1961, the Euro pallet revolutionized transportation by standardizing dimensions, allowing two pallets to fit perfectly side-by-side in a truck or train carriage. This standardization made them universally usable and easily reusable across industries and borders.
The installation Reflecting Unity pays homage to the Euro pallet. For each member state of the European Union, a single pallet is created, featuring a deep blue, mirror-like surface on its top. These pallets are arranged in nine rows of three, spanning one bay of the Slotervaart’s wing, filling the entire space from façade to façade. Visitors can walk between the pallets, with an 80 cm pathway between each, inviting them to explore the installation. Like the EPAL logo branded on the side of a standard Euro pallet, each pallet in the installation bears the name of an EU country on its short side.
As you walk among the pallets, the reflective blue surfaces continuously change, capturing your image alongside others and the surrounding space. This interplay evokes wonder and encourages contemplation, creating a dialogue between self, others, and the collective space.
