Folly Lemniscaat
Arnhem - Artborne - 2023 - 12 x 24 m. - Red Carpet + Ceramic tiles
The symbol ∞ (lemniscate) is used to express infinity. In 1944, 1,756 soldiers fell here during the Airborne landings. The Battle of Arnhem failed, leading to the Hunger Winter. Folly Lemniscate is a one-day monument. It symbolizes the hopelessness and infinity of war by creating an endless route in the shape of the lemniscate symbol within the landscape.
The route is anchored to the Duno Bridge along the Airborne walking trail. This "bridge to nowhere" was designed over 100 years ago as a landscape folly and represents hope for a life without war.
At the heart of the route lies a collection of tiles, each representing one soldier buried at the Airborne cemetery. Visitors can walk the infinite route as often as they wish, reflecting on loss, the Hunger Winter, and those currently living in conflict.
At the end of the route, each walker receives a tile made of seed paper containing carrot seeds. These tiles will spread across the land, sprout, grow, and once again remind people of war's impact during the harvest.
